The Power of Words

John 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14  And the Word became flesh, and tabernacled among us. And we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and of truth.

Words are important to our being.

Matthew 12: 36 But I tell you that men will have to give account on the Day of Judgment for every careless word they have spoken. 38 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

We think with words, therefore a sloppy vocabulary yields a sloppy mind. A vocabulary full of what we call curse words or slang will yield that kind of thinking.  This generation loves the “f:” word. That will be a dominate influence in their thinking. We can’t believe that there is no impact form a bad, poor, dirty, etc. vocabulary.

We think with words. Ergo, a society with a small vocabulary have a limited opportunity to develop. I have been told that those who study the “lost” tribes in the jungle, find the people with a small anemic vocabulary have a very underdeveloped culture. Think of the inner city’s vocabulary and look at the product. Just think of hip hop verses classical music and their impact of society. Evidence says we are better off with a strong good vocabulary in our culture.

But all tribes of people have a word for God.

The key to speed reading is your vocabulary. If you have a weak vocabulary, you are constantly struggling with what the writing means. A way to increase the speed of your reading is be diligent in your vocabulary development.

There is power in your vocabulary and your command of the language. If you opt for slang and curse words you will hurt yourself mentally. The bible tells us to stay away from curse words.

What is the final product of our society’s degeneration? Our final stage? Just look at the movies and TV. They are coming attractions to these questions. The bible says we will give an account for our thinking-vocabulary. I wonder if the degeneration of our vocabulary is a tip off of the collapse of the present culture.

Notice as any social group begins to go in the pit so does their vocabulary. Just compare Jack Parr in (1960’s) on the tonight show to the modern MC’s. Does their degeneration in vocabulary indicate progress?

Then study Jesus eloquent arguments to the people.

Be serious not careless when speaking:

Matthew 12: 36 But I tell you that men will have to give account on the Day of Judgment for every careless word they have spoken. 38 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

A small sample of the power of the Word in the bible:

Matthew 4:4  But He answered and said, It is written, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.”

Matthew 5:37  But let your word be, Yes, yes; No, no. For whatever is more than these comes from evil.

Matthew 8:8  The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my boy will be healed.

Matthew 8:16  And evening coming on, they brought to Him many who had been possessed with demons. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick

Matthew 13:23  But that sown on the good ground is this: he who hears the Word and understands; who also bears fruit and produces one truly a hundredfold; and one sixty; and one thirty.

Ideas:

  1. Get a booklet to track your vocabulary in. Through discovery add one word a quarter to your vocabulary. Write any new word in the booklet, get its definition and pronunciation, and then start to use it in verbal and written communication.
  2. Also, document and track any new revelation on Jesus.
  3. When reading a book, underline any word you don’t know and then be sure to look it up and write a definition in your book.
  4. If someone uses a word you don’t know write it down and look it up later. Two truths
  5. When you ask them the definition, don’t be surprised if they don’t know it.
  6. And not all words will you want to remember.
